Aurélien Guichard decided five years ago to set foot again in the land of Tourette near Grasse, to perpetuate the tradition of the seven generations of perfumers who preceded him. And to plant Centifolia roses there, while penetrating the mysteries of the profession of producer in contact with women and men of the art, grafters, cutters and collectors. A long journey for this pure juice from Grasse, raised in Paris by a perfumer-creator father and a sculptor mother, a student at the Givaudan perfume school in 1999. “The day I returned there, I discovered the perfumery, and it has become my whole life. Fourteen years later, he moved to Firmenich, and in May 2018, joined Takasago. The perfumer-creator juggles between the city and the earth, with the same happiness, and this immeasurable desire to share and transmit.

Si les maisons de parfumerie sont aujourd’hui nombreuses sur le marché, il faut bien reconnaître que la France jouit d’un patrimoine exceptionnel en la matière. D’ailleurs, la capitale mondiale des parfums se situe à Grasse, dans la région provençale. Dès lors, nombreuses sont les personnes vivant en ce lieu et travaillant dans le monde des odeurs. Or, c’est précisément là qu’est né Aurélien Guichard. La parfumerie semble presque inscrite dans son ADN. Retour sur le parcours de ce parfumeur prédestiné à devenir mondialement célèbre.
Aurélien Guichard ou une enfance passée dans les odeurs
Comme bon nombre de nez reconnus, Aurélien Guichard est issu d’une lignée de parfumeurs. En effet, il incarne la septième génération de parfumeurs de sa famille. Autrement dit, il n’a pas fait ce métier par hasard. Son père, Jean Guichard, était même le directeur de l’école de parfumerie et Givaudan. En parallèle de ses connaissances théoriques, celui-ci lui parlait depuis sa plus tendre enfance de la parfumerie avec un amour presque inconditionnel. Il a tâché de transmettre à son fils son éthique. Dès lors, il est rapidement devenu pour lui un modèle. Aurélien Guichard considère que la parfumerie est bien plus qu’un métier. Il estime qu’elle est une manière de vivre. Pour lui, un bon parfumeur doit être à l’écoute de son environnement. Il doit posséder une certaine « sensibilité à l’autre, de la générosité, et un sens de l’observation, que ce soit de son époque ou de ses clients ». Qui plus est, Aurélien Guichard confie que son humeur joue immanquablement sur ses compositions. « Quand je faisais mon école de parfumerie, dit-il, mon professeur avait une règle : il faut être heureux. C’est un métier de partage. Le nez est juste un outil, un peu comme la main du peintre. Or, il n’entretient pas sa main. Ce sont ses idées qui font la qualité de son travail. » Aurélien Guichard pratique donc sa profession avec bonheur et sa joie de vivre se ressent dans chacune de ses créations.
L’inspiration d’Aurélien Guichard
Unlike many perfumers, Aurélien Guichard affirms that his real inspiration does not come from this trip. He thinks it comes from people. All his creativity is based on exchange. Moreover, his father, Jean Guichard, says he is fascinated by the exchanges he has with his son. From then on, Aurélien Guichard develops juices as diverse as there are people in the world. Some of them contain a lot of ingredients. Others, on the other hand, are extremely simple. For him, the important thing in a perfume is that the technique is not visible but that only the emotion shows through. According to his father, Aurélien Guichard’s finest perfume is Gucci Guilty, a juice he describes as “complex and current”. However, we owe this perfumer many other creations. He has, among others, participated in the development of the fragrances Love In Paris, L’Eau du Temps, Baghari, Play, Ricci Ricci or Narciso.
